VUSC Alumni Association in 2013

Brimbank campus staff room

Driving through the boom-controlled entrance of the college parking lot, the sun warm on my cheek, I craned my neck looking for an empty spot. There were a few under the gum trees, but I didn’t fancy going there. My experience last time left the top of my car splattered as the magpies dropped their regards. I could see them perched on branches, watching me intently. Slamming the door shut, I made for the main entrance, glancing at youngsters chasing a basketball on the next-door court. This early in the morning the entrance was crowded with kids coming in and going out. From the queue outside the office, the girls inside were having a busy time. I was about to ask for the key to the Association office when I noted the door was already open. Smiling as memories of my own schooldays chased each other, some pleasant and others not so, especially when I faced an exam, I was set to meet other Association members and get some work done.

Looking back on 2013, I can hardly believe it is almost over and another Christmas is facing me. Where has the time gone? Still, it’s been fun and the Association got a few things done during the year. As always, there is more work than people to do it, and we are bending everyone’s ear encouraging them to become involved. By participating, there is so much more the Association could do with and for all VUSC students. An ongoing problem is getting records of past students, without which it is difficult to communicate Association plans and activities, but the college has helped and we now have almost 6,800 records on our database. To support us, we need some of those past and current students to become active members and help plan, organize and hold events like student reunions and support college activities. This is where membership fees get used!

Alumni Association providing student sponsorship

One of the pleasant things the Association has carried out is to present an award to two students during the 2012 awards ceremony in December, held at the Flemington Racecourse. This is something we will continue and I look forward to making awards during this year’s ceremony.

Steven Rowley and Ludo Rosas

Steven Rowley, the Association President, participated in a number of morning assemblies, talking briefly about the Association and encouraging students to get involved. It is important for students at every VUSC campus to be aware of the Association, realizing that it is a valuable mechanism for supporting activities, maintaining contact with past students, organizing reunions and participate in school events, and the Association is planning to hold reunions in 2014.

With the administrative setup completed, the VUSC Alumni Association can now devote itself fully to promote itself among the student body, produce regular newsletters, contribute articles to the College magazine, and organize more events. Work needs to be done on our Facebook page, and we would welcome an expert willing to become its administrator.

Class of 1963 Reunion

One of the nice things that happened in October was a reunion of some of the old St. Albans Technical School students, class of 1963, held at the St. Albans Hotel. Most of the faces were hardly recognizable, but it was nice to get reacquainted and swap stories of the many years that have gone by. It was a small gathering, but it renewed interest and got people talking about the school and possible future events.

2014 Events

2014 promises to be a productive year for the Association, with several planned reunions:

- 50th anniversary of Class of 1963

- Reunion of 2013 Year 12 students late in 2014

- Possible reunions of students from the Kealba and Deer Park campuses

So, become involved and make a difference! Without your input and ideas, things simply will not get done. The Association holds regular meetings at 7:00 pm on the first Wednesday of every month at the Brimbank campus Staff Room, James Street. Come along and have some fun.

It is time to renew your membership! If not a member, click here to download the form.
